Reel Tape Hydrolysis Baking Services
Certain reel to reel tape brands from the 1970s through 1990s may have hydrolysis which is a breakdown of the binder that adheres the oxide to the tape’s mylar base. One sign of this issue is that your tapes will make a squealing noise during attempted playback. If this problem is advanced, the oxides will shed right off the mylar tape base stock. Playing tapes in this condition will certainly damage your important reels.
Your affected reel to reel tapes will be carefully assessed prior to restoration. If needed, they will be baked in a special lab incubator style oven. This provides a 30 day window to transfer and restore them to a digital format. After 30 days, the tapes will revert to their present condition. Please note that not all tapes need baking.
